Illinois Marine Corps veteran and DIY devotee here to share some of my favorite things and connect with members of communities with common interests. I'm currently dedicating time to my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek and other car and overlanding mods and reviews, and we'll see where it goes from there. I also recently got into amateur radio and might do some related videos.

What's On YOUR To-Do List?
Просмотров 9422 месяца назад
I'm curious how many of my fellow dilettante's have to-do lists like mine. Littered with fixing things that aren't necessarily broke, but don't qualify as "fixed" or "done". Wandering attention and habitually failing to complete tasks is normal for my ADHD ass, and it's trend I hope to break soon.

Fix Stripped Screw Holes in Cheap Furniture

Modern "budget" furniture is often little more than laminated particle board or MDF, and it's not uncommon for fasteners to rip out of this "wood". In this video, I share a quick and inexpensive fix for this problem.
An Homage to My Old Table Saw

I can't be the only one that gets attached to tools that have served me well for many years can I? Regardless, I felt compelled to make this short homage to my old table saw before putting it out to pasture. This video is an accompanyment to the below linked video. Motorcycle Radio Comms - Wireless Ham Radio Thru Helmet

Sharing how I connected my radio to my motorcycle to work wirelessly thru my helmet's intercom system and a PTT button near my clutch hand. I'm no expert when it comes to things like this, but I do like to experiment just to see if I can make something work. This actually worked well for me so I figured I'd share the setup. SW Motech Pro Tank Bags - Would I Buy Them Again?
Просмотров 10 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Being new to adventure riding and tank bags in general, I decided to go with SW Motech's Pro series tank bags. I thought I was happy with them, until I took them on a long ride out west. A little bit of dirt from some mild trails gunked up the lock mechanism and almost prevented me from accessing my gas tank. Would I buy them again? Watch and find out. Teach. Don't Judge.
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Changing a Subaru Outback air filter is probably one of the most uninspired things to make a video about, but it recently occurred to me that the things many DIY'ers consider easy are not necessarily so to others. I also had an encounter with someone who was too embarrassed to ask how to do "something simple" because she was afraid of being judged. Which means her experience with knowledgable p...

What can you do to recover the data on the other drive incase it fails? Specifically raid 1?
Thanks for the very informative review. I've got a 1250GS, and am using a BMW large trank bag, Black Collection. I think I appreciate more now its simple strap attachment system, even though it's a minor pain at gas stops. It's also got an inner waterproof "bag", which to me is way more convenient than a rain cover. The only thing I don't like about the BMW bag is that it can slide slightly from side to side, no matter how hard I tighten the straps.
Hey Tom or anyone is there any software that will let you hear any encrypted transmissions or something that will pick up like a Police Radio on say NXDN or APCO 25? Or does anyone have any suggestions? Thx great video.. 73 Jeff - W4JFF
“….and your mom” 😂
Great video. I do have one question. Does the phone have to be active on a carrier?
Man, I'm only 34, but can check all these off on my list as well 👴
Where are you getting that number?Four sixty eight from I'm just learning this stuff.
Is the Nooelec NESDR Smart v4 a better option than the RTL SDR V3?
Does Nooelec NESDR Smart v4 follow the same install instructions as RTL SDR V3? Amazon Link for RTL SDR V3: Amazon Link for Dipole Antenna Kit: Amazon Link for Nooelec NESDR Smart v4 Bundle:
Had to share …a long time ago when I worked for the phone company I was running inside wire for a new phone installation. The lady of the hose wanted it in her sitting room and I need to make a small hole level with the baseboard beside the french doors… now had I looked on the other side of the doors I would have noticed how close the drapes were to the door frame. In those days we used a long brace and bit to make holes and as I proceeded to finish I felt a little resistance , but I was undaunted and continued to complete the task at hand…then I thought I would see if I came through at the correct sport only to find I had wound the drape around my drill and pulled it from the road…big duh moment The customer was very understanding and once unwound probably just needed ironing
That's a really nice vehicle, what is it?
My 24 CTW has four wires coming out of the latch (Green, Purple, and 2 Blacks) After leaving the switch it gets complicated as the wires are combined/taped to numerous other wires. Can I tap into two of the 4 wires directly off the latch itself? Which two wires should I choose?
Excellent explanation thank you! Besides making a great video, you have an excellent speaking voice!

I won't swap the car if it is new unless new loaner is a brand new car. it just don't make sense to make the swap.
I just got the yukon pro for my cb500x. It is a nice sturdy bag but it sits too close to the seat and it goes up against my chest if lean forward. I like to ride my bike like a sport tourer so it just gets in the way a bit. I stupidly threw out the packaging for the ring mount so I can't return it.
You've sold me on these! Have to get a pair now!
No mention of disconnecting the battery, is this just a given or is it not necessary?
fair point. Technically, I suppose disconnecting the battery when doing any work on automotive electronics is prudent. However, for this, I deemed the maintenance similar to changing a tail light bulb for which disconnecting the battery is not necessary (my opinion). Also, I needed power on to shoot the wires and test the switch to make sure I got my wiring right :). Hope that helps!
@@TomtheDilettante Doing the MOD today (if my wires are delivered) on my 24 CTW, wish me luck. Appreciate your video!
Tom, I went through the steps in you video and removed all the paneling... only to find the wiring in the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness is vastly different than your 2019. Wanna shoot a new video using my car as an example :) ?
Very Nice Explanation of traffic squelch.
I like your video no nonsense, no Long play cheesy music just straight to the point cut and dry 👍.
Assuming licenses are in place, can it be used for transmission too?
On my dry erase board in my shop I wrote " Degrease Honda generator". That To Do item is three years old, I still haven't done it.
Dilettante is my favorite chocolate covered fruit ...😂
Great and professionaly edited content. A subscribe from me :)
Best GMRS video I’ve ever watched.
I want to know if this will work with a sena spider..... anyone try it?
I appreciate the honesty, I've done this too.
BUT you're connecting a balun 50 Ohm Coax to a balanced dipole!
I was trying to justify the need of the new power tools that I was looking for on RUclips. Now I need to get this SDR thingy and sustain, integrate a completely new hobby in my 45mins daily free time. Thanks a lot buddy! Subscribed and liked on the spot.
This is disappointing to hear. I've enjoyed my experiences with Subaru but I also have always bought used. I'd like to think that this is just a bad dealership/salesman.
I'm unfortunately renting right now. I now miss having a spring house chore list!
You can never have too many 2x4s. At least my dad can't, anyway.
Ok gars ou je trouve ça pour acheter merci
You instantly got a thumbs up from me the moment you thru the manual over your shoulder ha ha ha thanks for that
Fine job brother
I did the same mod but mounted mine on the top of the panel by the glass. That way shifting cargo won’t press the button by mistake
Thanks for this! Just got home from camping in my 2024 and didn't even think of the struggle it would be, not being able to get in/out the back!
Very informative, thank you so much!!!
I’d already heard of it 😎
I would like to know (see) how it worked with the 40 meter sticks!!
Do I need to purchase sharp software
Your voice sounds like it would be perfect for radio, TV, Internet voiceover. This was a great video. very concise yet still has all the details and you never struggle for your words. Keep up the great work!
I just did my Chevy Colorado brakes for the first time on my own. I am buying a Crosstrek Wilderness next year and I will never pay the dealership again to do things that I can do on my own. Thank for sharing your knowledge!
Does this have NOAA weather ALERTS? I know it can SCAN noaa channels but can you set up automatic ALERTS?
Eureka! I had to research the meaning of Dilettante. I now know the disease we share. I expect we both have suffering wife's too.
Incredibly helpful, thank you! About to do this in my Wilderness. I was so disappointed to find no plug in the trunk. I want forward and rear-facing dashcams and now I'll have wires running all over my backseat.
You run SDR on a Raspberry Pi computer to
No B.S. and right to the point !! You get right to the heart of the matter dude. I alway's preach about using heat to losen any rust on the projects i tackle.
Thank you very much. I was looking for that information all over the place and you explain it pretty well, thank you again.
Is it just me or does TTD look an awful lot like Orson Wells?
